Learn dovetailing the way apprentices apprentices traditionally mastered certain woodworking techniques.
The class will consist of three phases: (1) Exploration of the features and uses of hand tools used in dovetailing (2) Beginning to dovetail and the establishment of good dovetailing technique and (3) Continued practice and development of dovetailing skill. Phases I and II will be taught on the first Saturday (January 13th - all day) and the Phase III on the second Saturday (January 20th - half day).
Students will learn how to accurately lay out a joint, saw straight consistently, and chisel precisely. The home assignment will entail cutting a dovetail a day, putting into regular practice this woodworking essential. Students' progress will be evaluated on the second session, with areas for improvement noted. If anyone runs into trouble during their daily dovetailing, they are welcome to confer with Joel via Skype to get them back on the right track.
The class teaches an essential woodworking skill via correct technique and regular repetition. Once you have your dovetailing skill in place, you can go on to do all kinds of fancy woodworking.
Class size is limited. Tuition includes all materials (including the homework) and use of tools during the class but students must obtain certain tools for home practice. Update: Class has already been held.

“If you want to learn to cut dovetails by hand, I highly recommend this class...I liked the no-nonsense approach and Joel's focus on old-school efficiency and practicality. I also liked that you have access to TFWW's tools..I dug learning this skill in a class rather than through books or YouTube videos because I feel that, hour for hour, a class is more efficient. Having an instructor there who can correct you on-the-fly, and give personalized advice, made me feel I was picking it up much quicker than I would if I were trying to just learn it on my own.
